How does multimedia enhance our messaging? Com 510 Knowledge and New Media Course Submission

There is no doubt about it, multimedia can enhance our blogs or webpages in various ways.  There are wonderful examples of sophisticated forms of multimedia use such as Snow Fall: The Avalanche at Tunnel Creek, New York Times article by John Branch.  Multimedia is used to give the reader a visceral experience with the story through this wonderful technology.

There are also simple ways of inserting multimedia into a blog to make is more appealing and interesting. Here are some examples:

You can insert a picture that demonstrates how to insert a picture into Blogger.

You can insert a video about how to insert a video into Blogger

You can insert a link about how to insert a link into Blogger. Here are directions on how to insert a link into Blogger.

If I had to choose one best type of multimedia, I would choose videos. Videos satisfy both audio and visual learning styles.  But any type of multimedia will enhance a message or blog and make is richer and stronger.

Blog - Best Practices - for SNHU Com 510 Knowledge and New Media Class submission

I chose this blog because I am constantly interested in information about the learner-centered teaching approach and the Flipped Classroom.  So I will use this blog to demonstrate best practices.

As I look at this blog I see that the function of this blog is to discuss the a method of learner-centered teaching - in particular - the Flipped Classroom.  The author offers her opinion about the pros and cons of the Flipped Classroom.  She outlines her writing approach clearly and informs the reader about her intent immediately by providing a description of her topic and a link to a website that describes the topic in more detail.  She provides a crisp narrative of her views on the topic. This, I believe is a good practice.  When reading blogs, it should not be difficult to see the intent fairly quickly and the reader should be about to hear the author's voice in the writing.

The author of this blog has clearly delineated each paragraph heading and each paragraph answers basic questions about the information she provides.  This is another best practice. She speaks in simple, easy to understand terms that will inform all audiences. She concludes her blog by discusses why her topic matters.  This helps the reader (especially if the reader is new to the topic) to easily comprehend why this information is important.

I believe that this blog demonstrates “best practice” in writing a blog.  The author demonstrates the appropriate form, function, and substance of how to write an effective blog.

The Social Networking site that will reach audiences most effectively.

I recently took a look at three Social Media Tools: 1. Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/ 2. LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/nhome/. 3. Google Hangouts - https://plus.google.com/hangouts I looked at each website to determine which of these social media tools will reach audiences most effectively. Whereas Facebook and Google Hangouts seems to cater to a broad and diverse audience, I believe that LinkedIn will reach its audience most effectively because it has developed into a focused website that caters to a specific population: professional job-seekers. LinkedIn is a Social Networking website. The LinkedIn’s website states that it is "The World's Largest Professional Network: 3 Million Strong." Judging from its reviews and population LinkedIn seems to have revolutionized professional networking. Although it requires self-published information about professional careers, LinkedIn can help professional job-seekers with job searches, career information and trends. It is structured so that a job searcher does not have to make numerous clicks before getting to the information needed. LinkedIn is a tool that is specific to the job-seeking, professional networking population. Upon completing a profile, like-minded professionals can share links, professional information such as job anniversaries, blogs, other information about professional concerns or trends and people in their professional field can endorse these individuals and respond to them. There are many such websites, but I would contend that they are not as structured, and specific as LinkedIn. In 2012, the LinkedIn Company reported 105% year-to-year growth in quarterly revenues to $167.7 Million, making the company the fastest growing public provider of corporate recruiting solutions (Bersin, 2012). When comparing LinkedIn to Facebook, Bersin states, “… LinkedIn is now becoming very focused and educated about the needs of corporate recruiters and talent management professionals.” I believe that this is the difference. LinkedIn is targeted, focused websites that caters to a specific professional population. LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/static?key=what_is_linkedin Bersin, J, 2012. Knowledge and New Media - Potential impact of unrestricted web publishing through mass media

Journalists and Bloggers can have a huge impact on society through publishing articles and opinions through mass media. I am very interested in Common Core and the impact it will have on American education and so I read the New York Times article, "Math Under Common Core Has Even Parents Stumbling, by Motoko Rich that was published on June 29, 2014. The author is a Yale and Cambridge University graduate who has worked for the Economist as well as the New York Times and seems to have about 4 years of experience. In her linkedin.com profile she says: "I'm interested in humanizing the statistics and finding trends." She does not seem to have authored any other peer reviewed work on the subject, and although the information is not fully cited, there are links within the article to credible, reputable organizations and websites such as the National Research Council and the National Academic Press. The only problem I would have with the article is that it seems like the author speaking for the "collective" parent, instead she is speaking for a very small number of parents. Many educators and parents are looking to see how Common Core will affect them. For parents and educators alike, just reading the title of the article could raise anxiety levels of both parties. This article, published in a publication that has vast readership, could have an immense impact. http://www.nytimes.com/2014/06/30/us/math-under-common-core-has-even-parents-stumbling.html?hp&action=click&pgtype=Homepage&version=HpSumSmallMediaHigh&module=second-column-region®ion=top-news&WT.nav=top-news

How does mass media shape my beliefs?

The forms of new media that I use daily are email, various online Learning Management Systems, inspirational websites.

New social media has influenced my perspective of events through Facebook, online journals and news blogs.  I am still "old school"  - I still watch the news in the morning and I watch the evening news. I do not have an Instagram or Twitter account - I think that they interesting but not necessary.

I find that much of the political media are negative and the they have a negative influence on society. I look for balanced media coverage especially in the political arena.  I find that this is not the case in recent years.

The positive influential websites for me are inspiration and self-help. It is wonderful to have, at my finger tips, websites that guide, direct and help me through my  life's journey.
