Knowledge and New Media - Potential impact of unrestricted web publishing through mass media

Journalists and Bloggers can have a huge impact on society through publishing articles and opinions through mass media. I am very interested in Common Core and the impact it will have on American education and so I read the New York Times article, "Math Under Common Core Has Even Parents Stumbling, by Motoko Rich that was published on June 29, 2014. The author is a Yale and Cambridge University graduate who has worked for the Economist as well as the New York Times and seems to have about 4 years of experience. In her linkedin.com profile she says: "I'm interested in humanizing the statistics and finding trends." She does not seem to have authored any other peer reviewed work on the subject, and although the information is not fully cited, there are links within the article to credible, reputable organizations and websites such as the National Research Council and the National Academic Press. The only problem I would have with the article is that it seems like the author speaking for the "collective" parent, instead she is speaking for a very small number of parents. Many educators and parents are looking to see how Common Core will affect them. For parents and educators alike, just reading the title of the article could raise anxiety levels of both parties. This article, published in a publication that has vast readership, could have an immense impact. http://www.nytimes.com/2014/06/30/us/math-under-common-core-has-even-parents-stumbling.html?hp&action=click&pgtype=Homepage&version=HpSumSmallMediaHigh&module=second-column-region®ion=top-news&WT.nav=top-news

  2. Carole, great work! This may be among the first articles the author Motoko has published. There looks to be some solid information that you can take from the article but as you have said it looks like the author is speaking on behalf of a small group. Hopefully, the author will receive feedback that will entice her to do more digging before speaking for a group as a whole.

  3. I have not previously read any information on Common Core or its effects of education, thank you for informing me and for choosing such an interesting article. I would have to say that the author also seems to be very knowledgeable on the topic. I have a one year old daughter and although she is not in school yet, I imagine that this will very popular by the time that she is.

  4. I agree with you Carol, journalist and bloggers have a huge impact on society. It is great that you take the time to examine the source. Having a Yale and Cambridge University graduate as the author does make readers feel more confident that the information is reliable. Thank you for this useful information.

  5. Very good choice for an article. I know that a lot of parents have been having issues with this Common Core for schooling. You have even went as far as to check one of the writers LinkedIn profile. That was some research on your end! I believe that all the sites you have looked up are creditable as well as the article.
